‘Gibraltar: Time to get off the fence’

Clare Moody, Labour MEP for the South West, responds to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee’s Report ‘Gibraltar: Time to get off the fence’

“The Spanish government’s recent actions towards Gibraltar have been completely unacceptable, and this report confirms that UK ministers need to do more and intensify diplomatic pressure.
“There continue to be disproportionate delays at the Gibraltar-Spain border and the continuing incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters by Spanish flagged vessels are seriously concerning. Just yesterday we saw the reports of the Spanish coming into British waters and removing one of the blocks that protect the fish stocks in this area; this has to be unacceptable.
“As your new Labour MEP for the region I will be working with colleagues in the UK parliament to continue to press the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; I will be pushing for answers as to why no FCO Minister visited Gibraltar between 2011 and 2014, how they intend to correct this and pressing for the UK Government to consider stationing an enhanced Royal Navy presence in Gibraltar’s territorial waters.
“Unlike representatives from this Government, I am committed to ensuring Gibraltarians’ voices are heard and I look forward to working closely with you to push forward on this.”
