"Transport investment is welcome, but hardly goes far enough" Dwelly

Cllr Tim Dwelly, Leader of Cornwall Labour Group responds to the government announcement on transport in the South West.

Commenting on the news of a new train deal for Devon and Cornwall by the end of the Summer, Tim Dwelly, Leader of the Labour Group on Cornwall Council, said:

'Whilst we welcome any investment in transport infrastructure in Cornwall and Devon, this announcement hardly goes far enough. We want to see journeys to London reduced much more and a better, more efficient rail line all the way to Penzance that will function 12 months a year and will not be disrupted by flooding. This again, is just another case of the Tories ignoring the real concerns and needs of the South West’s infrastructure, and offering shiny retail offers that do nothing to address the real problems.

To travel via train from London to Penzance takes nearly twice as long as a similar length journey from London to Newcastle.  Whilst a 14 minute improvement is a step in the right direction, there is clearly a need to take far more drastic action to reduce travelling times and increase reliability.”
