Plymouth is putting in place plans to help support vulnerable residents as the city prepares to lose around £60million in welfare cuts.

The two MPs for Plymouth; Conservative Oliver Colvile (Plymouth Sutton and Devonport) and Conservative Johnny Mercer (Plymouth Moor View) yesterday voted to cut disability benefits for people in the city.  However, in an effort to mitigate this, Plymouth City Council has set out plans to protect disabled people from these cuts.

The Council agreed a Welfare Support Framework which will ensure that the 3% of welfare that Plymouth is responsible for is used for those who need it most. The Council will ensure that vulnerable people are pointed in the right direction of services such as credit unions, debt advice and many others.

Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said:

“I’m proud that Labour in Plymouth can take action to protect people from the damage Tory cuts continue to cause.

“I’m hugely disappointed in Johnny Mercer and Oliver Colvile, who, despite protesting that they stand up for people in their constituencies, have yesterday taken £30 a week out of the pockets of the most vulnerable people in the city.

“If the MPs won’t defend the people that live here, then Plymouth City Council will stand up for the interests of people in this city.”
