Government turns down EU funding for foodbanks

Clare Moody, Labour's lead European candidate in the South West says: 'This Government are putting dogma ahead of real need'

Responding to news that the Government has turned down £203m in EU funding for foodbanks, Clare Moody, South West Labour Euro candidate for May's elections, said

"It is truly astonishing that the Government are refusing to claim vital funds that are should be made available to foodbanks.

"This is not about the foodbanks themselves, this is about the thousands of people across the South West that have been referred to foodbanks by front-line care professionals.  The fact that people are relying on charities to get a meal for themselves and their children in 2014 is shocking enough but the government's failure to claim over £200m in additional funding shows that they are willing to put dogma ahead of real need."
