Clare Moody, Labour Euro candidate has responded to recent events in British Gibraltar territorial waters.
“The Government must make it absolutely clear to Spain that this incursion by Spanish Guardia Civil police vessels into British Gibraltar territorial waters is both illegal and provocative. So far we have heard a lot of words from the Government but we have seen no effective action.
“During my recent visit to Gibraltar and meetings with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo I made clear Labour’s full support for Gibraltarians, and our desire to strengthen the continuing relationship between the UK and Gibraltar and to take effective action about the border issues.
“I have been to Gibraltar many times over the last 20 years, most recently in February this year and my Labour colleague in the Shadow FCO team is in Gibraltar this week, his second visit in the last 12 months. Labour are continuing to press the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on why no FCO Minister has visited Gibraltar since 2011.
“This recent naval incursion underlines the importance of Labour’s call for the British Government to consider carefully whether there is a need to now station an enhanced Royal Navy presence in Gibraltar’s territorial waters.”
